Dear Retailers,
I enjoy Christmas. I enjoy looking at all of the new holiday pretties in the stores. I love listening to Holly Jolly Christmas. I love picking new ornaments for my kids and looking at all of the fun new wrapping paper. Truly, Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year. It makes me smile.
But, why must you rush? Many stores began to display their Christmas elves along with their Halloween skeletons. Not the best combination, don't you think? Why do you even spend time putting out the Pilgrim's and cornucopia? It's as if we are forgetting all about Thanksgiving.
I, for one, love the season of Thanksgiving. I love a time of year dedicated to acknowledging all of our blessings. I love the sentiment of offering thanks to God before we enter a season of giving and receiving. I love planning the goodies I will make to take to my mother in law's home for our Thanksgiving meal. I love that I have a great recipe for dressing that I make each year.
And, so, retailer, I feel that you are skipping a wonderful season each year. We see less and less of Thanksgiving goods and more and more of Christmas. Are you not thankful for the sacrifice of the Pilgrims? Do you really know how much they went thru to even make it to this land? Do you know that most of them did not survive the first winter? Do you realize that the Native Americans, though skeptical at first, came to trust the new strangers? Did you know that because of the Pilgrims that Pocahontas was the first Native to accept Christ as her savior? No? You did not? Well, I'm afraid many others may not if we do not take the time to honor the season of Thanksgiving.
If we do not slow down and remember those before us and the sacrifice that was made for freedom, then their journey was for nothing. So, if you would please, not rush Christmas. You turn Christmas into a frenzied nightmare. But, that's a post for another day...
Thanks for your consideration.
Sincerely, Concern Citizen

I think Christmas would be more of a frenzied nightmare if the retailers did not put out their holiday items early. It would leave less time for people to do their shopping.
I personally enjoy being able to shop now so I can take time to relax and relect on the reason of the season during the month of December.
Just my two cents, not saying you're wrong. :o) I do like having Christmas things out earlier but I would like to see more Thanksgiving too.
Know what I wish? That we'd do away with Halloween and that way we could have that much longer to celebrate Thanksgiving. Except for the candy. Yeah. I'd keep that. : )
I shall not use your blog to list the myriad of things that retailers are doing wrong or disperse my strong feelings on the subject.
Let's just say that I agree with you and leave it at that. :)
I used to start my shopping early in the year & be finished by the end of Aug., so I could spread the expense & enjoy the fall and the Christmas season. And I did it WITHOUT retailers having any influence at all. But over the last few years I've ended up buying more than I should or than they need... because the grandchildren would think of things in Nov. that they wanted & I'd already finished my shopping. But I'd go ahead & get those things too. Last year I couldn't shop or wrap (had hand surgery) so I met Amazon... Now I can do it easily & quickly, mostly from home, then enjoy the season without the "rush". And I make a conscious effort to avoid those retailers who refuse to allow "Merry Christmas" & stick to the "Happy Holidays" for their employees. It's their choice, & it's my choice as to where I shop. I've noticed that the last couple of years more stores are allowing their employees to say, "Merry Christmas". Hmmm, must be some other folks who've made the same decision I did.
